Lynx

The colouring of a lynx is buff or tawny with mixed blackish hairs and the underparts are cinnamon-brownish. The tail is short and tipped with black; ears have long black tufts and cheeks have long pale ruffs which form a pointed beard at the throat. The feet are very large and well furred. Average height ranges from 24 to 30 inches at the shoulder with a body length of 30 to 50 inches. Females may wiegh 15 to 25 lbs; males 20 to 35 lbs.

Identification
The lynx resides mainly in snowy country and has therefore adapted to this climate. The feet are heavily furred making the tracks appear rounded and obscuring the toe prints. The tracks are larger than that of a bobcat and similar to a mountain lions although the lynx doesn't sink as deeply into the snow.

Lynx Damage
Most damagy caused by lynx is seen by farmers and cattlemen. A lynx will readily seek sheep, poultry, goats, game birds, turkey, fish, calves, cats and dogs. Preferred prey includes birds, rabbits, and other small mammals. Also, isolated attacks on humans have been reported.

Lynx Control
Preventative measures include Exclusion*. Control methods include Live Trapping*, Licensed Trapping*, Physical Capture*, Shooting*, Relocation*, and Destruction of the animal.

*For adetailed definition of each control method please see Animal Wildlife Control Services & Solutions»

Please note that, in contrast to almost all other Ontario animal control operations, as a licensed furbearer trapping company we are able to employ all of these control methods INCLUDING relocation or permanent removal of captured lynx.

Lynx Breeding
Unlike other felidae cats, lynx breed only once a year, in the spring. Their gestation is a bit shorter than the other cats as well, at about 63 days-vs-70-80 days for the caracal and serval.
