raccoons

What makes Mississauga such a wonderful place to live, is also what keeps wildlife such as raccoons and skunks hanging around. Expansive green spaces and parks like the Rattray Marsh Conservation Area, Riverwood Conservancy, Meadowvale Conservation Area, or Streetsville Memorial Park are home to many species of wildlife. Adjacent neighbourhoods see plenty of raccoon activity in and around homes, sheds, and yards. Businesses in the area as well find themselves in need of City of Mississauga raccoon control and removal services.

Understanding Raccoon Behavior in Mississauga

Older detached homes and townhouses with worn exteriors are often especially popular with raccoons. Keeping animals from getting into your Mississauga home should be your priority and, we will help with that. However, since you are on this page, we're probably past that point. That's ok, you've come to the right place.

Common Raccoon Entry Points

One of the most common ways for raccoons to gain access to your home, is via your roof. Any loose shingle might as well be a written invitation and your chimney may well be an adequate substitute for the hollow tree sought out in the wild. Even a small hole or other opening can be exploited by your friendly (or not) neighbourhood trash panda.

Signs of Raccoon Infestation

Later night or early morning hour pitter patter on your roof or coming from your attic, accompanied by chitter chatter is a good indication that you've got yourself a raccoon problem. Although, even prior to that, you may have found your garbage bin raided or knocked over, or found a raccoon latrine in your shed or under your porch.

Health and Property Risks Associated with Raccoons

  • Raccoon feces
Wildlife excrement carries a number of parasites which can easily be transferred to you or your pets. It is important to use proper health and safety precautions - please do not attempt to do this by yourself.

  • Rabies
Raccoons are the most common carriers of rabies. Rabies is a neurotropic virus that is transmitted mainly through saliva. Pets and humans can contract rabies. Unless caught and treated early, rabies is almost always fatal in humans.

Disease Transmission Concerns

Although there have been no sigificant rabies outbreaks in recent years, the virus is never far away. Something as simple as leaving water out for your pet can set off a chain of events with dire consequences. If an infected raccoon drinks water from the dish you left out, and your pet subsequently shares that water after, you have a perfect scenario for transmission of rabies. And, if your pet is one who likes to lick its owner, your health may also be at great risk.

Structural Damage to Homes

Raccoon damage to your Mississauga home may include the initial damage to gain access (damage to roofing or siding as well as interior walls), disturbed or displaced insulation, and chewed wiring leading to a fire hazard.

Effective Raccoon Removal Techniques

Trapping or physical capture and subsequent removal are the only ways to get rid of raccoons in and around your home.

Humane Trapping Methods

We will employ raccoon removal methods such as installing one-way exit doors, or one of several trapping methods. It is of utmost importance that we capture all animals and that no babies are left behind. We will then remove the animals. Because of our unique licensing, Hawkeye can offer options OTHER than releasing the captured raccoon(s) within a Kilometer radius of your Mississauga residence or business.

After a raccoon has already gained entrance, it is important to ensure that all animals are out before closing up. Spring and early summer are especially tricky; chances are, your adult raccoon is happily raising her young in your home. Attics are a particularly popular nesting location. The damage to your home will be greatly multiplied by a raccoon trapped inside, or by a female frantic to get back to her kits. As well, trapped animals will suffer a horrible death by starvation - something we definitely want to avoid at all cost. Nor would you want to be left with a smelly, decomposing carcass, unavoidable insect activity in your home, and subsquent necessity for dead raccoon removal.

5 star google reviewsRaccoon Damage Prevention and Exclusion Strategies

Exclusion is the most effective method for coping with almost all types of raccoon damage. It is essential to understand that if no attempt is made to prevent raccoon access to your property, buildings, or crops, the removal of one or more individuals will do no more than create a vacant territory and allow other wildlife to establish a presence.

  1. Eliminate all potential sources of food and water
This includes securing garbage and compost bins, feeding pets inside, eliminate standing or pooling water

  2. Secure access points
Repair roof, block any gaps that lead to porches, patios and sheds, cap chimneys, remove unused towers or antennas, secure and apply screening to ventilation openings

  3. Make your garden less attractive to raccoons
Erect chicken wire fences around your gardens, install one 100 watt bulb for every 15 square metres of garden (50 ft. by 50 ft.)

What to Know About Wildlife in Mississauga
